The Kindle 2009 DX or K2?
Have you heard of the latest device that allows you to download books and start reading them in minutes? The e-reader has revolutionized the print media as we know it. Ahead of the pack is Amazon, with its Kindle devices. The K2 has been on the market for awhile, but now Amazon has released the Kindle 2009 DX, and it’s causing quite a stir. If you don’t have one of these devices, or already own one and are considering an upgrade, then read further for a comparison of the two, with regard to pricing, features and options to gain an understanding of what each has to offer.
The K2 features a fixed, six inch diagonal screen; the Kindle 2009 DX features an almost ten inch diagonal screen with an auto-rotating feature. Besides the fact that the DX is much larger than the K2, it also offers the possibility to choose between landscape or portrait mode, by simply using the automatically rotating screen. Because of this, the DX is definitely more suitable for reading books and literature, newspapers or any kind of material containing charts, illustrations, tables or maps.
In order to provide a good comparison between Amazon’s two devices, the storage capacity of each must be taken into consideration as well. The DX provides a 4GB internal memory, double the 2GB capacity in the K2. To put it a different way, with the DX, you can store almost 3,500 novels, while the K2 holds approximately 1,500.
When using the K2, users have encountered difficulties being able to read PFD files because they required file conversion that was possible only through an email to Amazon. Additionally, this support incurred extra costs. The good news is that with the DX, you are able to directly download PDF files onto your device, because PDF support has been integrated into the DX.
Price is another important factor to consider when choosing a wireless reading device. The DX retails for around $489, while the K2 costs around $359. Even if the price of the DX is too much for your budget, you should still consider it, since it has so many great options.
Comparing the two devices side by side, the clear standout is the Kindle 2009 DX electronic reader. The only real disadvantage is that it is around $130 dollars more than the K2 model. If you are looking for advanced features, and especially the PDF capability, then the DX is the model to purchase. Though the K2 can get your toe into the e-reader market, the DX can help you jump right in.
